counting my blessings

Gratitude is the fairest blossom
which springs from the soul.
~Henry Ward Beecher
i'm truly overwhelmed
by the amazing support
from all my friends
who helped make my show
a huge success
thank-you
to dede and mary
for your love and encouragement
without you there would have been no show
to cathy and ann-marie
for opening their wonderful home
and hosting my show
to ron
for helping me face my fears
and guiding me though them
to my art friends
for traveling the distance
to all my friends and clients
who have all been
"cheerleaders"
and my new friends
thank-you
thank-you
thank-you

early spring

with temperatures way above normal
15celsius --62degrees
it feels like spring!!!
as i wondered through my garden
looking under the debris for signs of life
i'm a little hesitant to rake out the beds
just yet!
i have a funny feeling that the will be
one more snow fall before easter

encaustic class

For whatever we lose
(like a you or a me),
It's always our self
we find in the sea.
~e.e. cummings

my favorite place to be is near water
above are two shots
one of the luety life guard station
near my home
and the second of a light house
in pacifica, california
just outside san francisco
for the background i used
sounding maps from lake ontario
then added some clear wax and cheesecloth
and some umber oil paint to
highlight the texture

i just love how a simple photo
can be transformed into
something like this!

we found this field of sunflowers
i managed to take lot of photos
i forgot about this one
when i just want to practice in ps
i find a photo and just start playing

and the a grunge border

blue skies

what a glorious week
with blue skies
and temperatures rising
the snow melting
birds singing
it looks like an early spring
out for a walk at lunch
i was fascinated by the sky
the clouds where indescribable
i couldn't decide which photo i liked best
so i'm posting my favorites

encaustic class

sometimes, i just don't know what to do in class
usually i have some thoughts or ideas and prepare all week
but this time i had nothing!
so for inspiration i went looking through my texture file
i have all kinds of photos i've taken

this metal sign i found downtown
( i usually shoot everything in sight)
you just never know what they will look like
after playing around in ps

with just a few clicks
i changed the brightness/contrast
and cropped it square

encaustic and oil
18 x 18
with help from my teacher
we figured out how to approach this project
for the background lots of cream, taupe and white
i used the iron to mix the colours, smooth
and create subtle texture all at once
i added the circles with the lid from a metal tin
and then mixed oil paint with lots of mineral spirits
and started dripping the paint

i'm not used to having to wait for things to dry
so i will add more paint when it does
so far i'm liking this new technique
i'll have to experiment some more
